You’ve spent the last 10 months, wondering, hoping, praying and longing. Your skin has stretched, your body aches, you've forgotten what it feels like to wear a belt. Or maybe it was piles of paperwork, a journey across the world, endless tests, countless needle pokes,  or heartbreaking loss that brought you here.

And then, a baby is placed on your chest.

The intoxicating smell of their hair... the perfect way their head fits under your chin...the fuzzy hair on their shoulders...the awe of hearing their lungs suddenly breathing air on their own...their curly finger nails...their wrinkly, still purple feet... To think of every little thing that had to go completely RIGHT...and now, this intricately designed, perfect baby is cradled in your arms.

As your photographer, the desire of my heart is to create a visual diary of your journey; the joy, the struggle, and the immeasurable love.

In the fall of 2011, my husband and I were blessed to conceive easily. I became a mother to Owen Anthony on May 30, 2012. I watched daily as he changed and grew, and just couldn't believe I created this perfect, tiny human! We had a bit of a rough start in the beginning. Undiagnosed postpartum depression made me feel overwhelmed and lost in my new role as a mother. I wasted so much energy trying to be a perfect mom. I definitely regret not seeking more help and just allowing myself being still with him in those first precious months.

In January 2015, I became pregnant with my second baby. My world was shattered when my sweet Ava Grace went to heaven at just 5 weeks, 4 days pregnant on February 9, 2015. I was given the incredible gift of being able to see her. Witnessing the early stage of  my baby's development was both heartbreaking and breathtakingly miraculous.

Chelsey Grace is named in honor of Ava and the life change she brought to me. I spent the next few months finding Jesus, leaning into the promise that I'll see Ava again. I also dove into learning all I could about pregnancy and birth; I needed to be able to trust my body again.

In late spring of 2015, I became pregnant with my third baby. After surviving a loss and finding my faith, I was a different mother. I treasured that pregnancy and was grateful for each day my baby grew. On February 12, 2016, I gave birth naturally to my rainbow baby, my beautiful Oliver Donald. I made sure to memorize his features, soak in the smell of his fuzzy hair, and always, always spend those extra five minutes snuggling. The first few months with him were a beautiful, healing and sacred time of my life. In July of 2017, we endured the loss of another sweet baby. Orion Job went to heaven at just 4 weeks, 1 day gestation due to a chemical pregnancy. Thankfully, I had God's grace to rely on and I was able to focus on the hope of another rainbow.

We welcomed our second rainbow baby, Annie Patricia on June 1, 2018. At 33 weeks pregnant, I had developed a rare, pregnancy-related liver disorder and I had to be induced just before 37 weeks to keep us both safe. We spent 18 brutal days in NICU, an experience that is still a very fresh wound on my momma heart. I'm still mourning the loss of my ideal birth and trying to heal from all that was robbed from our first few weeks together.

My five completely different experiences are so special to me, and they all play an equal role in my calling to be a birth doula and maternity, newborn and baby photographer.

What is a doula?

"The word doula is a Greek word meaning women’s servant. Women have been serving others in childbirth for many centuries and have proven that support from another woman has a positive impact on the labor process." -Americanpregnancy.org

if i have a support person, do i still
need a doula to support me?

My approach to doula work is to support your partner in supporting you. I want your partner to feel as much a part of your birth as possible, I will not take over their role. Their focus is to be present. A doula, however, brings their educated birth expertise, trained techniques and personal birth perspective to provide you with the most comprehensive support.

What are the benefits of a doula?

As summarized in a Cochrane evidence review, doula supported women:
-25% less likely to have a cesarean
-31% less use of Pitocin
-10% drop in use of pain medication
-34% fewer negative birth experiences
-Statistically likely to feel less pain
-8% more spontaneous vaginal births
-Shorter labor by an average of 41 minutes
-High Apgar scores in infants

do you support home
Births?

My priority is to support your choices for your birth, wherever and whatever those choices may be.

what should i expect through the process?

For your initial consultation, we'll spend our time getting to know each other to make sure I'm the right doula for you. At your prenatal visits, we'll go over your Birth Vision (or I will help you craft one) and we'll discuss positions you can use when labor begins. During the birth, I will support your physical, emotional and spiritual needs. I will stay until you are settled as a family and assist with breastfeeding if requested. At your post-partum visit, we'll talk through your birth and I will give you resources for any questions or concerns you may have.

if i have a support Person, do i still need a doula to support me?

do you support home Births?

how can you be my doula and photographer?

The role of a doula encompasses your entire pregnancy, not just your birth. Leading up to and following the birth, I will be your emotional and spiritual support, and provide you with resources when you have questions. When it comes time for birth, because my approach is to enable your partner to support you physically, I'm able to have free hands to photograph your birth while still providing emotional and spiritual support. Of course though, if you request my physical support or I sense your partner needs help, I will accommodate to your needs.

what exactly do you photograph?

My primary focus is to document the connection, support and love surrounding your birth. However, birth is also an incredible physical accomplishment and I will also document your strength and raw power. Birth can also be messy, but that's what makes in beautiful. I am creative in my approach to keep your photos modest and we will discuss specific shots you do and do not want of the birth process and delivery.

can't my spouse or a nurse take photos?

Birth is one of the most difficult scenarios to photograph well, and takes a skilled professional to be able to handle any lighting condition. Oh, and if you didn't know, babies can come out fast! A spouse or nurse who is focused on other things may miss the moment.  Not to mention, your spouse should be focused on you, and a nurse has tasks to do to best care for you and your baby. Having a photographer frees those people to do focus on their important jobs while I focus on mine.

what happens if you miss the birth?

Prior to the on-call period, we will discuss when it's time to contact me so I can ensure that I am present for the birth. However, because birth is unpredictable, if I miss the moment of birth I will shoot the moments following, and provide a free Fresh 48 Session.

back

why would anyone want birth photos?

We document our baby's first steps, their first words and keep baby books of their important milestones. Why wouldn't you want to document the moment they took their first breath, the first time you kissed them, or the smile on your partners face as they finally meet the person you've had inside you for 10 months? Birth photography is the beginning of your baby's life story! Hiring a birth photographer is a gift for you and for them. Personally, I did not have a birth photographer with my first baby and I regret it so much. My photos from my second and third births are some of my most prized possessions.

Leading up to and following the birth, I will be your emotional and spiritual support, and provide you with resources when you have questions. Can I bring my own props/outfits?

In order to create stunning, heirloom quality portraits, I only use my meticulously curated selection of blankets, wraps and minimalist props for my sessions. I believe the focus should be on your baby, not an elaborate set up.

Do I have to buy products through you?

You can certainly purchase products from me from any session, but you will also receive a print release granting you permission to print where you please. When your photos are delivered, I will provide you with a list of recommended printing labs if you choose to print your own. However, the products ordered from me will have the most accurate coloring and will result in pristine quality, heirloom pieces.

back

when should i book my sessions?

It's best to reserve your due date in my calendar a few months ahead of time, but if you're like me and have serious pregnancy brain and forget, I always leave room in my calendar for last minute bookings.

Do you do cake smash sessionS?

Because my goal is always to create heirloom quality portraits filled with emotional connections, I do not typically photograph cake smash sessions. I'd much rather focus on the blossoming personality of your baby. Exceptions can be made, however, I only allow naked or white frosted cakes in my studio.

do you accept payments?

Yes, of course! I am a mom of three and I totally understand all of the expenses that come with having a baby. Please don't hesitate to ask about payments.

DO YOUR SESSIONS INCLUDE DIGITAL FILES?

Fresh 48 & In-Home newborn sessions include all digital images. Grow 365 sessions include about 15-20 images. Studio Newborn Sessions include 10 digital images with the option to purchase more.
